The Wombat says: Nolimit City are known for their weird and wonderful themed games – all delivered with a tongue-in-cheek approach. But they’ve outdone themselves with the San Quentin xWays slot!
If you are used to games like the Fruit Shop Megaways, this will be an eye-opener.
This game takes place inside the infamous prison in California – where some of the country’s most hardened criminals live – including 700 inmates on death row.
Extraordinary Extras!
A sobering thought, Wombat Fans – but don’t you worry; there’s a shedload of things to be happy about in this release.
Split Wilds, Win Multipliers and Free Spins with Jumping Wilds. Not forgetting Nolimit City’s trademark xWays mechanic.
So, do you fancy a trip to maximum security jail? The inmates look grumpier than Gordon in the Hell’s Kitchen slot, I wouldn’t mess with them.
With top wins on offer of 150,000x your bet, you will need to be on your “A” game. High variance? It’s Sky-high Wombat Fans, Dubai Sky High. There is another game called the Folsom Prison slot from Nolimit City if you like this kind of theme. I guess San Quentin was a popular release for them.
Look and Feel
The design in this slot is superb: there are cheeky touches throughout the game.
High concrete walls, barbed wire and security cameras form the backdrop to your reels. Along the top and bottom of your reels are caged areas which will be unlocked during play with special symbols added.

Spin Soundtrack
Your ears will be treated to a cool Latino soundtrack, the kind that would be blasted out in the yard. We like how you get to know the inmates from their prison files that appear as the game loads up.
Our favourite comedy moment? The soap. On a losing spin, you’ll see through the eyes of an inmate as they drop the soap in the shower – there’s also the bare feet of another prisoner right behind and the words ‘Not Good!’
Irreverent as always – that’s Nolimit City!
San Quentin xWays Gameplay
The San Quentin xWays slot has five reels, three rows and 243 Ways to Win. Place your wagers from 0.20 up to 32.00 per spin. This game is not as complex as the Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness slot but neither is it a basic 3 reeler.
The five high-value symbols are the tattooed inmates Baker Bill, Beefy Dick, Loco Luis, Crazy Joe Labrador, and Heinrich. You would not mess with any of these guys on the Inside, that’s for sure. Beefy Dick is the Big Boss here; land five of his mug anywhere on the reels and you’ll scoop five times your bet.
The lower value icons are your all-important prison paraphernalia; a bar of soap (yikes), a Zippo lighter, a hand knife, handcuffs and some bog roll.
The warden’s badge is your wild icon and will substitute for all other symbols on the reels to help form extra wins – except for the guard’s watchtower which represents the bonus symbol.
Free Spins and Bonus Features
A lot going on in this slot, so let’s take a look at these extra features:
Enhancer Cells
Landing one or two bonus symbols (on the same reel) will unlock the Enhancer Cells above and below the grid. Your bonus symbols will now turn into Wilds, and you’ll be awarded one of the following cool modifiers that will show up in the newly opened cell positions:
Razor Split: All icons on the reel will split into two. If the Razor Split appears in both the top and bottom unlocked cells, the icons will split again creating four wilds.
High Values: A high-value symbol will be added to help boost your wins.
Wild: An extra wild icon is unlocked to help you scoop more winning combos.
xWays: A random symbol, stacked four rows high will be revealed. If you land an xWays on top and bottom cells you will get a whole reel of the same icon.
Split & Jumping Wilds
In the base game, Split Wilds can land on any reel. This handy little icon will split all the other regular symbols on the same reel into two more icons. This can give you up to 46,656 Ways to Win from each spin. Wow!
As for Jumping Wilds – well these are a bit more complicated. They only appear in the bonus round and jump onto a random regular reel position for one spin before moving onto another one. The Jumping Wilds also come with a Multiplier.
If a Jumping Wild hits a reel with a Razor Split enhancer on it, it will double its multiplier and will stay at that level for the remainder of the feature. The maximum multiplier for a Jumping Wild is 512 times your bet.
Lockdown Free Spins
Hit three, four, or five of the bonus icons and you’ll trigger the Free Spins. You’ll get one, two or three Jumping Wilds, and the random number of spins you’ll be given is determined before the start of the feature, plus you will get a win multiplier from one of the inmates who will become a special symbol. We managed ten Spins with a five times multiplier with Crazy Joe.
During this fast and furious bonus, the Enhancer reels will be unlocked to bring a bucket load of wins. Plus if you hit another bonus you’ll get another spin and an extra Jumping Wild.
Buy Feature
For those of you getting tired of waiting for the bonus feature to be triggered the standard way (and you don’t live in the UK where the option is not available), you can part with some of your hard-won cash and buy the feature for 100x your bet. You’ll immediately set off the Lockdown Spins. Is it worth it? You decide Wombat fans.
Conclusion
Just like a long spell in prison – the San Quentin xWays slot might not be for everyone. Firstly, a lot is going on – and if you blink you might miss it! And secondly, the game is more volatile than an angry toddler in a heatwave.
But, get over this and you’ll find this game a ripper through and through, with the key to netting the big wins coming from the Free Spins Jumping Wild multiplier – that goes all the way up to 512x your bet.
This is a great-looking game with a theme that you won’t forget in a hurry – this slot could keep you spinning for a whole day. But just make sure you have the bank balance for it!
Oh, and don’t drop that soap wombat fans…
Wombat Score: 5/5
Another inspired release from Nolimit City, this one’s a Banger!
