  Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games both online and in Las Vegas, Monaco and Macau. It is relatively simple to play even with big paws (although there are plenty of variants to learn), and it’s a fun and entertaining game. The Wombat has a great choice of variants including Vegas Downtown Blackjack, Classic Gold and Live Multiplayer Blackjack.

  How to play blackjack
  The basic aim of the game is to build a hand that scores 21, or as near as you can get to it.

  Number cards are scored by their face value, and Kings, Queens and Jacks score ten. Aces can score either 1 or 11 – you may have a choice depending on what your hand is.
  You will be dealt 2 cards, as will the House. An Ace and a picture card or a 10, will give you the magic 21.

  If your score is less than 21, you can go for a “hit” (extra card) or you can “stand”. You can keep requesting new cards until you get to 21 (or as close as you dare go). If you go over 21, you will go “bust”, and the House will win that round, so be careful! Whoever reaches 21 between you and the dealer, or is the closest to 21, before going bust wins.

• Blackjack Variants

  Choose from Vegas Strip Blackjack, Vegas Downtown, Spanish 21, Multi-Hand Blackjack Bonus, and many live blackjack games from Evolution and NetEnt who make some of the best looking games out there.

  If you are new to blackjack, we’d recommend Blackjack Pro (Monte Carlo) Single Hand which, despite having Pro in its name. is suited to newer players and experts alike. Blackjack pays 3:2 and the Dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17. It’s the Classic Blackjack, if you like, where you’ll be dealt 2 cards face up and the Dealer will get one face up card.

  Spanish 21 is another variant on offer. In this game, there are 8 decks of Spanish cards (with the 10s removed). The Dealer has to Hit a Soft 17, and a player Blackjack beats a Dealer’s Blackjack. Although the 10s are removed,  there are rules that favour the player to compensate- you can split up to 3 times per hand, for example.

  Or try Vegas Downtown Blackjack. In this variant, the Dealer must hit on a soft 17 (where the Ace s counted as 11). You can split 2 cards with the same value.

  Whichever variant of blackjack you choose, remember to play methodically and try and maximise your odds by hitting, standing, splitting and doubling based on what you know about the dealer’s hand. It’s always better to play with your head than your gut!

  Live Blackjack
  Now I love a fast game of virtual blackjack, don’t get me wrong, but I find myself spending more and more time with the lovely dealers on the live casino section. Let’s just say that these ladies and gentlemen brush up well, and they certainly know their double-downs from their surrenders.

  The live dealer games have been optimised for all screen sizes, so no matter what device you’re on, you’ll be able to easily fire off some hands. The designers have done a fantastic job in getting all of the action onto smaller screens. Just swipe and tap your way through the various views and betting layouts and you’ll be chasing 21 in no time.

• Blackjack Rules

  The rules of the game will vary depending on the game that you happen to be playing, but there are some basic guidelines that apply to most variants, like our Professional Blackjack game for example.

  Aces may be scored 1 or 11, the number cards take their face value and tens and royal cards score 10.
  A “blackjack”, which is an ace and a 10 point card is the best hand.

  After you bet, you get two cards. A face-down card is the “hole card”, otherwise you’ll see face-up cards.

  If the dealer has an ace, you’ll be able to take out “insurance”, which is an extra side bet.

  You can Stand, Hit, Double or Split.
  On a Double, you double your bet and you will receive just one more card.
  You can also Split a pair, (and normally a pair of 10-point cards). You double your bet, split the cards and play 2 hands.

  Depending on the variant, you may only get one more card when splitting aces and sometimes you can’t double down after splitting cards. Also, if you get a blackjack after splitting, this is only worth 21 in some games (which can be beaten if the Dealer then gets a blackjack).

  Some games will also allow you to Surrender, where you lose half your bet and you throw in the towel early.

  Practice Makes Perfect
  The key to playing these different variants is to practice, and that’s where our demos come in. Play for free and get used to the games first- that way you are less likely to make mistakes when you put some real money on the table. I am afraid we can’t offer a free demo on the live games as our lovely dealers refuse to work for free (!), but you are more than welcome to play our virtual blackjack demos as long as you like.
