The Wombat says: Welcome to the future Wombat fans! And also to the Kaiju slot from those game geniuses at ELK Studios. Kaiju means monster in Japanese (the most famous of which was Godzilla of course), and this release is all about these great big scaly creatures.

Here at Wombat Towers, we always enjoy trying out ELK Studios releases – as they’re an imaginative bunch, and we’re curious to see what they come up with next.

This time round there’s a bunch of fairly bad-tempered dragon monster things, that appear to grow crystals on their skin. Humanoids need said crystals to use as currency. But these precious gems are very heavy too, which causes the scaly creatures to be a very grumpy bunch indeed. So they take their anger out on the humans. We think. It’s not actually that clear, but the monsters are cool so who cares?

Next is the bit where we come in! It’s our job as Wombatters to help female cyborg, HA-42  hunt down the Kaiju and take their precious gems for the good of mankind – also so the poor monster things can get their heads down and a have a good night’s sleep… According to ELK Studios themselves:

‘All hope lies in the hands of our female cyborg, HA-42. She moves at the speed o light with her superhuman strength and infinite power source.  Still, even more important than her endless endurance is her compassionate human heart.’

Look and Feel

Wow! The graphics in this game left us speechless ( and we all know that doesn’t happen very often to this Wombat).

Do me a favour and compare this game to older ones like the Danger! High Voltage slot machine for instance. Now, I happen to like that game as it has 4096 Ways to Win, but sorry, the graphics don’t compare to Kaiju.

Set in an uber modern Tokyo-type cityscape, the reels are filled with various Kaiju creatures and their bonkers multi-coloured crystals all, on see-through holographic reels. The attention to detail is insane, and we love the little design touches like the  ‘ELK Studios founded 50 Years ago’ sign that hangs above the Blade Runner-meets-Tron empty street.

One word: Amazing. The best thing since the White Rabbit slot and sliced bread. So there you have it.

Kaiju Slot Game Play

Kaiju is a expanding 5-reel slot, with 3 rows and a possible 7776 Ways to Win on offer, if you beat the Red Kaiju during the bonus game. This slot is jam-packed with special features, like the expanding reels which are something that ELK Studios have called Vertical Lasers.

This cheeky little feature plays an important part in the base game and the Kaiju Battle Free Spin rounds, too. It basically opens up more ways to win (hence the  possible 7776 paylines), but more on this later on…

Your symbols on the reels are made up of a whole bunch of futuristic symbols that include the blue, green and red crystals as your high vaue icons, and the lower-paying red, blue and green credit cards, plus HA-42 female cyborg herself and the neon Wild symbol. The Red Kaiju is the big daddy in this slot by the way, paying out a handsome 300 credits for 5x on a payline.

 Vertical Lasers
When 3x or more symbols of any kind form a winning combo on a payline from the bottom of the reels up, a vertical laser beam will reveal a wild symbol on the row above. This will open up more pay lines and some bigger and better payouts.  It’s a very cool touch indeed.

Bonus Feature

The Free Spins bonus Game in Kaiju slot is called the Kaiju Battle. If you manage to land 3x of the HA-42 Scatter symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 (at the same time) you’ll get 7 free spins. Next you’ll take over the role of Human Android 42 and battle one of the Kaiju in hand-to-teeth combat! Well, actually it’s more like reel-to-reel combat, but you know what we mean…

The next bit is a bit complicated, so take note Wombat Fans. A random Kaiju opponent is chosen from the coloured gems – blue Kaiju, Red Kaiju and Green Kaiju which is linked to a pattern of hot spots that need to be activated by the vertical lasers. Just like in the base game, these vertical lasers will reveal Wilds that cause the reels to expand up towards the hot spot, and when in does, you’ll receive 1 extra Free Spin (you can have a maximum of 5).

A Kaiju is defeated only when all the hot spots have been activated by vertical lasers, and when the last vertical laser defeats the mighty Kaiju, all symbols in the laser combo will become Sticky Wilds that stay where they are for the rest of the free spins. Yeeessss!

The aim of the bonus game is to expand the reels  so that they include each of the different hot spots that belong to each of the 3 different Kaiju. When all hot spots has been covered, the monster is defeated and the mega payouts are son to be yours. Basically, the more reels expanded, the more ways to win there are in the game.

Phew! It sounds more complicated than it is…

Play Kaiju on Mobile

ELK Studios have deliberately created this game to be played on mobile. In fact, Kaiju is what they call a ‘Mobile First’ slot especially designed for portrait mode – which is why the reels expand upwards instead of sideways from left to right. So, if you feel like kicking some oversized big-lizard ass while you scoop some decent coinage – all on the hop, then you’ve come to right place.

Conclusion

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Yes it’s so good we had to say it 3 times. It features immersive game play the likes of which this Wombat hasn’t seen before, which helps a lot, as this is a high variance slot. This means that you can get lost in the dystopian monster action while waiting to rake in the big wins).

Kaiju slot looks amazing and it plays like a dream with its mix of Free Spins, Sticky Wilds and vertical Expanding Reels. It’s a completely unique offering from ELK Studios, and one that we’ll be playing for years to come. A must-play slot. Right, we’re off to cook up some Japanese Ramen noodles.
